How to design your UI/UX Case Study
Good case studies are the key to your success in any Design Interview

Hi, so today we’ll learn about the case studies in UX Design and why they are so important. To began I will start with defining what exactly is a case study.
A UI/UX case study is basically a presentation of your work in this field. It represents a lot of information to anyone(maybe the hiring team, the interviewer or even your audience) about YOU and your WORK related to UI/UX Design, such as:
- How you think with respect to solving a problem
- What is your thought process
- The way you approach and work
- Shows your skills and the impact you have made with you solution.
From a junior designer to a head of design role, case studies play a very vital role in creating your portfolio. Sometimes people actually judge your work, your personality, and your way of working through your portfolio and case studies.
The anatomy of a case study
A good case study explains your design process from start to finish, providing reasoning behind each decision leading up to the final design. Remember to keep it concise and precise, as hiring managers will typically scan this part of your portfolio. Here are few stages you could show in your case study to make it easy to compile and show your work.
1. Introduction: Give a proper introduction to your project, including the problem statement which capture your reader’s attention. You can include few final mockups, logos and even goals of the project. Things you should include in the introduction:
- Overview — What is the project about? OR Who is this company? What do they specialize in?
- Challenge — What is the challenge or problem? What are you trying to solve?
- Role, scope, and constraints — What are your roles in the project? Who else is in your team? What was the timeline of the project? What were the platforms or constraints?
- Approach — What are the methodologies you have applied?
- Results — Describe the end product.
2. The Process: Showcasing your process is the most important part of a UX design case study. Things you should include:
- Design process — How you approached to the problem? Which design process you choose? How you went through each step in the process.
- Methodologies — Which methodologies you used and why? How have these influenced your process?
3. The User Research: Next, call attention to the research you did and briefly introduce the technique you included & why you used it, what you hoped to learn, the result, and how it influenced your design.
Explain everything What did you do? Why did you do it? What was the result? What did you learn?
Always conduct the research which is useful and influence your design decisions.
- Product research
- User interviews and surveys
- Competitive and comparative analysis
- User personas
- Empathy, experience, or customer journey map
- Affinity map
4. The Design: Now walk the reader through your design phase. Show how you are able to take your research and apply it to your design. Explain how you came to up with final designs, how you test these designs with user and how have you incorporated the feedbacks.
Your designs should justify the research, have a clear understanding of user needs and should be meeting expectations.
- User flows
- Site maps
- Card sorts
- Paper sketches and prototypes
- Medium fidelity wireframes
5. The Results and Next Steps: Reaching to the end, explain and justify your results, how you ended up the process, what have you learnt from this project and lastly what would be the next step. In this section try to provide high-fidelity mockups of your product.
End your case study with your contact information, for people to approach you( if you are looking for work opportunities), else you can end it with summarising everything in 2–3 sentences.
So that’s a wrap for Today!
I have created few case studies by now, so you can check some of them for your reference. I hope you liked it and found it useful. Support me by following me here and showing some love by hitting that clap button 😊
